Programming

I am a largely self taught programmer, you are welcome to browse my hobby work including the code for this web site.
From here you can download my program information and programs. There are currently two strands of progamming:

Microsoft Visual Basic Programs

The Microsoft Visual basic programs are a collection of Macros contained in an Excel workbook "SSS.xls".
This will self start when run if Macros are enabled, however if you do not trust ANY macro software simply disable macros and view the code, if it looks suspicious in any way or asks for passwords on free software DO NOT RUN IT if you have not obtained it from a reliable source.
I hate people that produce those sort of things and think it clever, they are just a bane on society and cost you, me (and themselves) large sums out ones hard earned income. How come it costs us money? Beacase we have to pay for the products made by firms that have to pay to stop the problems that these nasties cause. (This puts up the prices for everything from basics such as food and drink right up to high technology products and services such as televisions, travel and telecommunications.) ... There, I've had my rant!
The full code, for these macros of mine, is fully browsable so that you can easily see that there are no hidden viruses or other nasties. At no point in the code does the program make any attempt to access the disk or save anything else, it does save various internal Excel settings and data to a sheet within the workbook. (It will ask if you want to save these changes when you exit as this is part of the Microsoft system). This has been developed in Excel 2000 but I have tested it on other, newer versions, of Excel and it seems to work fine.

Web site programs

The web site programs are just the ones used for this site, including the server side programs and a web page that is not available on line as it is the one I use to update the database of locations on the map. The code within these downloadable files is identical the the code I use for testing before I upload the file to the website, but has had the password I use for my online database removed. All testing and editing etcetera has been carried out using a collection of programs which can be downloaded from the web completely free of charge.

Please note "SourceForge"" is a good source for relaible free software of all types.
The links below are to the software that I use. These packages are not necessarily the best for the job and certainly not the only ones available. They are just the ones that I happened to find and found that I could work with. Many are far more powerful than I need and I do not use them remotely to their full capabilities.

To edit the code I use "Komodo Edit" (See "Download Komodo Edit" at top right of the linked page)

To test the code I use "Easy PHP" (See the "download" grey block to the right, just below the title block of the linked page)

To upload files I use "FileZilla Client" (See after "Looking for the latest version?" a little way down the linked page)

To edit bit maps I use "mtPaint" as it supports transparancy. (See over to the right of the linked page for "DOWNLOAD")

In addition I have made extensive use of two self learning sites for creating web sites:

Firstly w3schools.com

and secondly www.tizag.com/, unfortunately my links to this one now fail.

Another useful site is "HTML.net"

While "webdesign.about.com" provided the information needed for me to achieve the downloads (They have much more than this).
